»Non-Pedigreed Architecture«

Architecture Without Architects attempts to break down our narrow concepts of the art of building by introducing the unfamilar world of nonpedigreed architecture. It is so little known that we don't even have a name for it. For want of a generic label, we shall call it vernacular, anonymous, spontaneous, indigenous, rural, as the case may be.

Unvortunately, our view of the total picture of anonymous architecture is distorted by a shortage of documents visual an otherwise. Whereas we are reasonably well informed about the artistic objectives and tecchnical proficiency of painters who lived 30'000 years before our time, archaeologists consider themselves lucky when they stumble over the vestiges of a town that goes back to the third millennium B.C. only. Since the question of the beginnings of architecture is not only legitimate but bears hevily on the theme of the exhibition, it is only proper to allude, even if cursorily, to possible sources.
